Myth seven - in the 1970s they were predicting a new Ice Age

MammothYou may hear that lots of scientists in the 1970s were predicting a new Ice Age.  This isn't true.  There was a slight cooling between the 1940s and the 1970s.  We know that this is because of sooty air pollution blocking the Sun.

Because of this cooling, a few people thought we might be starting a new Ice Age.  There wasn't much interest in the idea - just a few magazine articles and a book.  There were no international agreements amongst groups of scientists, and no TV programmes or films.  It was just something a very few people believed.

Today, almost all scientists agree about the causes of climate change.  This means we should be taking it very seriously.  All the major scientific institutions are warning that the temperature is rising because of man-made emissions of greenhouse gases, and that it will get worse unless we reduce emissions.

Myth eight - the atmosphere is too big for us to have an impact
